About the HHC

The ASU Hip-Hop Coalition (HHC) is a student organization that promotes the positive aspects of Hip-Hop culture and dance. The Hip-Hop Coalition strives to provide a safe learning environment for each individual regardless of race, culture, gender, sexuality, body shape, religion or any other difference that may divide us as humans. As members we have opportunities to showcase our dance skills while highlighting important social issues within our community and world. The HHC experience combines teamwork, holistic wellness and the positive spirit of dance to nurture individual creativity, and ultimately, the acceptance of self and others.

The ASU Hip-Hop Coalition consists of dedicated dancers that are committed to using dance as a vehicle to service our community. And the HHC, in turn, takes care of and fosters an open relationship with each member of our organization. The development of each individual is very important to us. Through our regular hip-hop classes and meetings we aim to have each member become physically and spiritually healthy and use our time to socially interact with one another in our diverse group.

An important aspect of the HHC is our commitment to education and the community. Each year, we are invited into elementary schools, high schools, community colleges, ASU events and also community programs like a city's Parks and Recreation program to teach Hip-Hop clinics and Hip-Hop history lessons (See past venues). We have targeted schools that are unable to offer dance instruction due to lack of funding. We provide "Learn How To Teach Dance" workshops so the children can teach dance to their peers during their after-school activities, physical education classes, or even to create their own "Groove" teams.

The ASU Hip-Hop Coalition is an excellent organization that promotes outstanding group service participation and positively effects a large segment of the ASU & Valley population. We are very excited to provide you with more information on our ASU Hip-Hop Coalition! We would also like to invite you to come to any of our upcoming meetings and performances

FAQ's

1. When does the Hip-Hop Coalition meet?

Well that all depends on what your involvement in the Hip Hop Coalition is. Dance Members meet every Tuesday night from 8:30-11:00pm for a hip hop/choreography class. Level I Members meet every Tuesday night from 8:30pm-11:00pm for the hip hop class, but also meet from 8:00-9:00pm on Wednesdays. Level II members meet every Tuesday night from 8:30-11:00pm, Wednesdays from 8:00-11:00, and Thursdays from 8:00-11:00.

2. Can I join the HHC at any time during the semester?

You can join as a Dance Member or a Level I Member at any time, but Level II auditions are held at the beginning of the fall semester.

3. Where are the classes held?

Class meetings are held on ASU Main Campus at the Student Recreation Center (SRC) upstairs in the Small Gym. We are not a part of the SRC's Group Fitness Program, so don't be surprised if you don't see our class on the schedule.

4. I really like hip-hop, but I've never taken it before. Can I still join?

Of course you can! The HHC is for dancers of all levels (please see our Classes section for a breakdown of levels). The most important thing is that everyone has fun. If you find that you need assistance, just ask! Not only are the instructors open to questions, but we have Dance Assistants that are there to help anyone that needs assistance. OR, you can become a Level I Member so you can get that extra coaching time on Wednesdays with Level II.

5. Do I have to go to ASU to be a member of the Hip-Hop Coalition?

If you are not an ASU student and you would like to join the Hip Hop Coalition, please contact us directly, by e-mail, at hiphopcoalition AT yahoo.com.

6. How much are the classes?

In addition to the $25 SCA fee every member must pay per semester, there are class fees. Class fees are paid for by the semester, and are less expensive than any dance studio in town! Dance Member fees are $50 a semester. Level I Member fees are $100 a semester, which not only includes an HHC t-shirt and the additional coaching sessions, but also gives you the opportunity to perform at various venues! Level II Member fees are $200 per semester, and this group performs at the HHC's most prominent venues. Compare these fees to the standard $45 you'd pay for just one month of class at a dance studio, it's a screamin' deal! Please note though there are NO REFUNDS. Once you sign the HHC contract, you are liable for the membership fees even if you are unable to continue through the semester.

7. Can I try out a class for free?

Unfortunately, we require semester fees be paid upon the first class you attend, and there are no refunds once you've paid for the semester. However, you are welcome to talk to the HHC Treasurer to discuss the possibility of setting up a payment plan (Note: at minimum, you will need to pay a portion of the semester fee). Please see our Fees section for details on payment due dates.

8. I love the music that's used in class. What is it?

The music depends on who is teaching class. Feel free to ask the instructor after class.

9. So basically, I just show up at the SRC on Tuesday night at 8:30 pm with my membership fees, ready to dance?

Yes...we'd love to have you join us! Don't forget to wear comfortable dance clothes and bring a positive attitude. SEE YOU THERE!!

10. How can I get the Hip Hop Coalition to perform at my event?

E-mail us your performance request at hiphopcoalition AT yahoo.com with information on what the event is, along with the time, location, and how to contact you.
